I finished THE book! My book, Making Peace with Suicide: A Book of Hope, Understanding, and Comfort has been released. I am over-the-moon excited. This has been a long-time coming (almost 3 years) and a profound personal process as well.
Everywhere I go there is always someone who has a story to tell me. Suicide is all-too pervasive and calls for our attention. The good news is that in this book, I take judgment off the table and we look at suicide with an open heart and wide lens. We explore suicide vis-à-vis teenagers, the military, post-partum depression, as an end-of-life choice, and ask if addiction is a form of slow suicide.
There are stories. There are tender, hopeful and healing personal accounts from loved ones who have felt the sucker punch of grief as well as the amazingly courageous stories from the brink by the formerly suicidal. These stories are the heart and soul of this book.
And there’s a healing methodology and, of course, it starts with story. If you know me, I always like to have a story at hand and this is my very favorite healing story.
I open the window even more to expand our perspective. We look at the lesson of suicide and explore suicide and the soul and the energy of suicide on the planet now.
Happily and gratefully, the reviews have been great. There are words like “essential” and “must read.”

Thank you for sharing my excitement with the “birthing of my book.” I am deeply grateful to all of you who have supported my efforts, shared your stories, sent me good info, and encouraged me along the way. It has meant so much to me.
P.S. Here are two of my favorite endorsements:
“Finally. A book that explains—in the simplest of terms, in a non-sensational, non-academic manner—the phenomenal, worldwide epidemic we call suicide. If you read one book on mental illness and how it affects our world, READ THIS ONE!”
–Ginny Sparrow, Editor, American Association of Suicidology
“Suicide is one of our most painful, difficult, confusing and wounding of human experiences. Dr. Adele McDowell addresses this topic with love and beauty. She non-judgmentally restores empathy, compassion and understanding. She courageously offers deep tending in a “place of primal pain.” And she is comprehensive, sharing the history, complexity, universality, and even positive dimensions of this mysterious act. Whether you are contemplating or have survived the attempt, lost someone to suicide, or counsel and help these populations, Adele McDowell’s Making Peace with Suicide will bring you hope, healing, compassion and understanding.”
